Qualified immigrant
A person whose immigration status allows them to receive certain government benefits and tax credits.
Not all immigrants can get government benefits. A "qualified immigrant" is someone whose immigration status makes them eligible for programs like SNAP (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly food stamps), Medicaid, and other assistance.
Immigration rules for benefits are complex and change often. Your immigration status matters for most programs. For example, you may need to be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident (green card holder), or have another specific status to qualify.
If you're not sure whether your status qualifies you, apply anyway—it's free. Only the agency decides if you're eligible. You can also ask a local legal aid organization or immigration advocacy group for help understanding the rules for your situation.
