VA Disability, Pension & Health Care

The US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers many benefits to people who served in the military. This page covers three main kinds of help:

• Disability compensationmonthly payments for veterans with health conditions or injuries caused or made worse by military service.
• Pensionmonthly payments for some wartime veterans with limited income who are older or have a disability.
• Health caremedical care through VA health facilities and, in some cases, community providers.

Some family members and survivors of veterans may also qualify for certain benefits.

Whether you qualify depends on things like your service record, your discharge status, your health and, for pension, your income.

You can apply online, by mail or in person. Accredited representatives, such as those at some veterans service organizations, can help you apply for free. Be careful of anyone who asks you for money to help you apply.
