About Extra Help

Extra Help is a federal program that helps people with Medicare pay for prescription drugs. It is also called the Low-Income Subsidy, or LIS. The Social Security Administration takes applications for Extra Help.

Extra Help works with Medicare Part D, which covers prescription drugs. If you qualify, it may help pay for:

  • Monthly Part D premiums
  • Yearly deductibles
  • Copays for your medicines

Extra Help is for people with Medicare who have limited income and resources. Some people get it automatically, such as people who have Medicaid, get SSI or are in a Medicare Savings Program. Others can apply through Social Security.

If you take several medicines, the savings may add up over a year. It may be worth applying even if you are not sure you qualify. Have details about your income, savings and bank accounts ready when you apply.
