What help is available—and what an amount does not tell you

The Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB) program helps with Part A and Part B premiums and Medicare-covered deductibles, coinsurance and copayments. SLMB and QI help with the Part B premium. QDWI helps with Part A premiums for certain disabled people who work. State eligibility rules can be more generous than a general federal chart, so ask the state to assess the available programs.

After the decision: reporting and renewal

Read state renewal requests and report changes according to the notice. QI applications must be renewed annually, and QI funding has additional limits. Confirm the program and effective dates on each decision rather than assuming all Medicare cost-help programs have identical rules.

Do I apply through Medicare or through my state?

Should I apply if my income is above a federal example limit?

Ask the state to assess your case. Some states have more generous rules, and not all income or resources are counted in the same way.
