What can you buy with SNAP, and what can't you buy?
SNAP benefits pay for food you prepare at home, like fruits, vegetables, meat, and bread. You can't buy prepared foods, hot foods, or non-food items.

You can buy food to prepare at home with SNAP (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). You cannot buy prepared foods, hot foods, or non-food items.
What you can buy
SNAP covers foods you cook or prepare yourself:
- Fruits and vegetables
- Meat, poultry, and fish
- Grains and bread
- Dairy products like milk and cheese
- Snack foods and non-alcoholic beverages
- Seeds and plants that produce food
What you cannot buy
SNAP does not cover:
- Hot or prepared foods (like deli items or rotisserie chicken)
- Foods served in the store (like soup from a salad bar)
- Alcohol or tobacco
- Vitamins or medicines
- Pet food
- Paper products, soap, or other household items
- Restaurant meals

Can I buy hot fried chicken or prepared deli food with SNAP?
No. You cannot buy prepared or hot foods. You can buy raw chicken and cook it at home, or buy cold deli meat from the counter.
Can I use SNAP at restaurants?
No. SNAP benefits are only for food you buy to prepare at home. In a few states, some restaurants may accept SNAP for meals for elderly, disabled, or homeless people—ask your state SNAP office if you qualify.
What if the store says I cannot buy something?
Store staff sometimes make mistakes about what SNAP covers. Ask to speak with a manager or call your state SNAP office to confirm the rule. You can also ask the store to try the purchase again.
