Can I get Lifeline if I'm on SNAP or Medicaid?

Yes. If you get SNAP (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) or Medicaid, you automatically meet the income requirement for Lifeline (the federal phone and internet discount program). You don't need to prove your income again.

The rule

Lifeline has different ways to qualify. One way is to get certain government benefits, including SNAP or Medicaid. If you're on either program, you're eligible for Lifeline.

You still need to apply, though. Being on SNAP or Medicaid doesn't sign you up for Lifeline automatically.

How to apply

Go to the Lifeline website to apply or find participating phone and internet providers near you. When you apply, you'll need to show proof that you get SNAP or Medicaid—like your benefit card or a recent letter from your state agency.

What Lifeline covers

Lifeline gives you a discount on either a phone plan or an internet plan (or sometimes both, depending on your provider). You still pay something, but you pay less than the regular price.
