Unlike other health insurance programs, Medicaid has no enrollment deadline. You can apply to your state's Medicaid program whenever you need coverage.

How to apply

You can apply through two ways:

• Your state Medicaid agency. Each state runs its own Medicaid program. Contact your state directly to apply.
• HealthCare.gov. You can also apply online at HealthCare.gov, which will send your application to your state Medicaid agency.

Applying is free. Only your state decides if you qualify.

Who qualifies

Medicaid covers different groups of people:

• Children
• Pregnant people
• Older adults
• People with disabilities
• Most adults aged 19–64 in states that expanded Medicaid (in these states, income limits are usually up to 138% of the federal poverty level)

Income limits vary by your state and which group you fall into. The 2026 federal poverty guideline is $15,960 a year for one person and $33,000 for a family of four in most states. Alaska and Hawaii have higher limits.

What happens after you apply

Your state will review your application and tell you if you qualify. If you do, coverage can start as soon as the same month you apply in some cases. If you don't qualify for Medicaid, you may qualify for help paying for private insurance instead.
