Work requirement

A rule that you must work or do work-related activities to get or keep certain benefits.

Some benefit programs require adults to work, look for work, go to school, or do training. The rules are different for each program.

For example, TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) usually requires adults to take part in work activities. SNAP (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) has work requirements for some adults without dependents.

Work requirements may have exceptions. For example, you might be excused if you are caring for a young child, have a disability, or are over a certain age.

If you do not meet a work requirement, you could lose your benefits. It is important to understand the rules for the program you are applying for. Only the program agency can tell you if a work requirement applies to you.
