College can be exciting, but money is often tight. Tuition, books, food and rent add up fast. Many students do not know they may be able to get help, so it is worth checking.
Start with financial aid. A Federal Pell Grant is money for college that you usually do not have to pay back. You apply by filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year.
Food and health coverage matter too. Ask your state SNAP office how its rules apply to students. Medicaid depends on your state's rules and your income, and you can apply at any time of year.
Your school's financial aid office is a good place to ask questions. Staff there can explain your aid and may point you to other support on campus.
