Recertification

Most benefits require you to recertify—or "re-apply"—periodically. You'll need to show that your situation hasn't changed much, or explain what has changed.

For example, if you get SNAP (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly food stamps), you may need to recertify every 6 or 12 months depending on your state. You'll report your current income, family size, and expenses. If your income went up, your benefit might go down. If it went down, your benefit might go up.

Recertification deadlines are strict. Missing the deadline can stop your benefits, even if you still qualify. The agency will tell you when to recertify and how to do it—usually online, by mail, or in person.

Recertification is free. Only the agency decides if you still qualify.
