Notice of Action

An official letter from a government agency telling you that it has made a decision about your benefits application or existing benefits.

A Notice of Action is a formal letter from a benefits agency. It tells you whether your application was approved, denied or needs more information. It may also tell you that your benefits are changing, ending or continuing.

The notice explains the agency's decision and usually tells you:

  • Whether you qualify for the benefit
  • How much you will receive (if approved)
  • When benefits start or stop
  • Why you were denied (if that happened)
  • How to appeal if you disagree
  • What information you need to provide next

You should read the notice carefully and keep it. If you don't understand it or think there's a mistake, contact the agency listed on the letter. Most notices include instructions for appealing within a certain time frame, usually 30 to 60 days.
